While 2011 may seem far away at the moment, wedding gown designers are busy putting together their spring shows. Some of the designs have already hit the runways, and some trends can already be identified! Statement ruffles were the dominant wedding gown trend for 2010, and they can still be seen on the 2011 runways… Vera Wang uses them in a dramatic sheath-style dress below with a tasseled necklace for an accessory.
The quality of the Vera Wang brand’s craftsmanship makes the difficult cut of this gown work, and the subtle flare of the skirt is flattering and on-trend. Delicate peach as a color choice may be considered non-traditional by very conservative brides, but the shade translates well under the glare of cameras and can be worn with good results by women with almost any coloring, particular blonds and brunettes. The only obvious way in which I would have improved this look would have been to add some necklace jewelry or a long pair of pearl earring. Although knowing the usual more-is-more aesthetic in Dallas, most area readers would prefer the addition of both pearl earrings and a pearl necklace to spice up this gown. The relatively plain design of the bodice allows for the addition of either a long necklace looped several times or a small pearl choker.
As for 2011 trends, the primary one to watch for is floral appliques: tiny buds stitched all over the bodice and skirt of the gown or large sprays of fabric flowers fastened at the shoulder or the waist. First, Vera’s rendition:
Isn’t this an utterly amazing dress? Aside from the frothy tulle worthy of a Midsummer Night’s Dream fairy queen, the dusky lavender makes a statement quite aside from the glimmering pinwheels of the floral appliques on the bodice! While this gown could never be called “classic”, it has the self-assured panache to eclipse every other dress in the room. This, dear readers, is a GOWN, and any bride would float down the aisle when buoyed up by the filmy skirt, flattering sash, floral detailing and subtle lavender color. The styling of this gown is so unconventional that it would not be improved by the addition of bridal jewelry… and it doesn’t hurt that the model has a pair of killer collarbones! Ordinarily, plain ivory, cream or white gowns are improved by the addition of accessories, whether they are crystals, pearls or glass beads.
Modern Trousseau ‘s version (the is the Kendra dress) pairs a floral pattern of lace with a fabric corsage sewn at the waist. Lace is a material that can border on too traditional, but the sweetheart necklace and lack of straps on this gown prevents it from looking fussy or “old”. The busyness of the lace overlay should be complemented with relatively simple jewelry and floral arrangements that are sleek and uncomplicated.
As for gowns in the Dallas area, for brides looking for showstopper gowns the 2011 Blue Collection by Enzoani has left its temporary home in Dallas and is back on the road, but his fierce (to quote Tyra) interpretation of this year’s trend can be seen in the Diana:
SURPRISE! That floral detail is actually a belt, and comes in both ivory and feather gray. I am impressed by this addition because it is striking while still looking somehow organic, and draws the attention to the waist in a flattering way that distracts from any bunching or bulging that may occur if the bride has not purchased the proper garments to wear under the gown (spoiler! post about that coming soon!). Apparently it is a best-seller, and Enzoani offers more belt options in different colors and styles, featured here on his blog. Accomplishing embellishment with accessories while maintaining the focus on the belt might be considered difficult if it weren’t for the fact that pearls now come in the silkiest, most elegant and delicate shades of gray imaginable. Perfect for pairing with the Diana belt.
