The 50′s are one of the most popular eras in fashion, and it’s no surprise: the nipped waists and full skirts of the period are some of the most striking silhouettes ever created for women, and still function as inspirations for fashion development today. The style of Marilyn, Audrey, Sophia and Grace dominated the movie screens, and such red things as the bold red lip, structured hair, pearls and cat-eye makeup created a signature look that was both sensual and self assured. No one captured the look of the times quite like Richard Avedon, the photographer who caught the great Dovima and her canine friend Sascha. The statement hat, structured suit and cigarettes make this a quintessential 50′s image.
In the video below the Fashion Institute lays out basic outfits from the decade that was characterized by wealth, exuberance, high employment and the emergence of the youth culture in the wake of World War II.
The AMC show Mad Men has been responsible for one of the most successful reintroduction of the 50′s fashion influence into the mainstream aesthetic. What I Wore TV takes the modern woman through the process of creating a 50′s look today using a combination of vintage thrift finds and contemporary pieces.
