Beautiful Baking

Sometimes it takes more than the printed words of a recipe on a page to get baking inspiration going. Summer is the season to try beautiful, unusual cakes, however, and this recipe definitely qualifies. Find some luscious local beets at your farmer’s market if you have one (or an organic option at your supermarket if you don’t) and give this cake a try.

Cooking in Community

As the first blossoms open on the front-porch lime tree and the area farmers markets show signs of reviving, I’ve taken a breather from more intellectual pursuits to delve into cookbooks. One in particular that has made appearances on several “Best of 2010 Cookbooks” lists and which proved surprisingly accessible is Dorie Greenspan’s Around My French Table. I personally had the impression that the preparation of French cuisine is impenetrably difficult. But Greenspan’s book is cheerful, down-to-earth, personal and informative.
