Audrey Hepburn is unquestionably a film, fashion and humanitarian icon, and her outfit in the opening scene of Breakfast at Tiffany’s is rightly celebrated and imitated. The statement pearl choker may be faux, but the sleek black gown, luxuriant upswept hair and enormous glasses all combine to create a vison of glamour at odds with the empty, early-morning streets through which she walks. But it was Hepburn’s languid saunter that sold the image more than anything she wore, and that’s why–in the numerous instances of imitation–they never seem to get it quite right. Audrey always seemed like royalty, even when she was playing a call-girl, which made her casting as Breakfast at Tiffany’s heroine Holly Golightly doubly interesting.
