“Dress Like A Lady”: An Exploration

When you were a child, did adults ever admonish you to “speak/sit/dress/(fill-in-the-blank) like a lady”?  As you grew older the reminders probably came less frequently, but perhaps they are no less important. With the recent North American tour of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (formerly known as Prince William and Kate Middleton) the personal style choices of the latter have brought the concept of “dressing like a lady” firmly back into the cultural consciousness. While very few of us have the Duchess’ patience to wear pantyhose with every outfit or her incentive and budget to look flawless on every occasion, but some style guidelines could be derived from her outfits and those of other timeless, radiant women who seem to have that je ne sais quoi aura of a “lady”.
