Fun with Layers

We are seeing it again: the layered look in accessories.  It first appeared in the 60’s, and since then each decade defined its own artistic interpretation.  The 90’s also had its own take but I believe this season’s latest evolution is the most fun we’ve seen in necklaces.

However, considering the explosion of hues and textures, length layering may easily go awry.  Here are a few tips: with more layers comes more variety of selection and metal color.  In the past, selection remained generally between the gold or silver varieties.  These days, with gold and silver prices at all-time-highs, we are seeing  an increase in copper and rose.

A cohesive look can also be achieved by similarity in chain link size range.  Geometric links are always in vogue, but size similarity keeps it classic.

As in interior design, odd numbers are always more visually appealing, so go for accessories that feature designs of three to five and yes, why not seven?  Nine may be a bit too tricky but the results may be worth the try.

Consider seasonality.  Too many layers may hint at hot and heavy, but not in a sexy way.  Summer is light and breezy – so accessorize in the colors of sun and sea.

Most of us are not aware that necklace lengths actually have specific titles. For example lengths of 20 inches are called Matinee and 24 inches are Opera lengths.  When selecting chain lengths, make sure to keep a 1.5 to 2 inch difference between lengths in order to highlight each chain.  Don’t be afraid to use chain links with alternating beads and pearls that don’t overwhelm. And lastly, don’t forget to coordinate your accessories with your outfit.

Ladies … remember that when it comes to dressing, fun rules.  Play with colors, tinker with lengths.  Be outrageous and create new rules that bring out the fabulous in you.
